Limitations of Practice as a Nurse Practitioner in Maryland - 2022

Last Reviewed: July 20th, 2022

Professionals are encouraged to give their best in an environment that gives them adequate responsibility and autonomy. Structures and systems that threaten these pose limitations even in the healthcare system.

Maryland operates the “full practice” regulatory structure in which NPs are allowed to handle tasks that they are equipped to do through training and experience. This is preferred to the reduced practice where NPs are mandated to be in career-long professional relationships with other healthcare professionals like doctors and dentists.

The National Academy of Medicine endorses the full practice structure as the way forward for healthcare in the US. RNs and NPs must lend their voices and resources to advocacy towards the implementation of the full practice structure in all states in the US.
