Unlike some other states, Maryland operates the Full Practice Authority regulatory structure in which NPs are allowed to handle tasks that they are equipped to do through training and experience. That is preferred to the reduced practice where NPs are mandated to be in career-long professional relationships with other healthcare professionals like doctors and dentists.

The National Academy of Medicine endorses the full practice structure as the way forward for healthcare in the US. RNs and NPs must lend their voices and resources to advocacy towards the implementation of the full practice structure in all states in the US.
