Limitations of Practice as a Nurse Practitioner in New Jersey - 2022

Last Reviewed: July 20th, 2022

Although the APN-NP license comes with prescriptive authority, nurse practitioners are still mandated to be in career-long collaborative practice agreements with physicians. These agreements will specify the limits of the nurse practitioner’s authority concerning one or more areas of practice, including prescription.

This kind of limitation is common to states that operate the “reduced practice” regulatory structure. This structure prevents nurse practitioners from using all the tools (skills and knowledge) that they have amassed through training and experience to a great extent.

The National Academy of Medicine supports the implementation of the full practice structure in all states as this will help nurse practitioners be more responsible and actively involved in making complex decisions as their training equips them to be. Nurse practitioners must join hands to advocate for the adoption of the full practice structure in all states.
