Nurse Practitioner Licensing Guide for the state of Minnesota

Nursing practitioners (NPs) account for the majority of advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) in the US. This may be due in part to the wider variety of population groups that require them represented. They are registered nurses (RNs) licensed to complete tasks that would be considered advanced for a regular RN. Therefore, their licensure process includes stringent requirements such as advanced education and national certification.

This is necessary as NPs are to be capable of wielding more autonomy in healthcare teams and making critical decisions. In certain states, NPs can head a private practice where they provide services, particularly at the primary healthcare level. NPs have proven to be instrumental in promoting preventative healthcare which reduces the incidence of emergencies and helps patients live healthier lives.

The Minnesota Board of Nursing is the chief licensing authority in the state and is responsible for issuing practice licenses to RNs and APRNs. Prospective APRNs are allowed to apply to the board for licensure and if they fulfill certain requirements, as will be covered in this guide, they will be issued a license to practice as an NP or in any other recognized APRN role in Minnesota.
