Nurse practitioners who live in Missouri can face a bit of an uphill battle with income and practice restrictions. The mean wage for the state is $103,490 (Bureau of Labor Statistics - 2021), which falls about $7,000 short of the national mean wage. Not terrible, but it does leave room for improvement. So if you’re a nurse practitioner in Missouri, how can you increase your salary to meet or exceed the national average while dealing with legal limitations? Let’s take a look at your options.
Missouri requires a collaborative agreement with a supervising physician in order to practice as a nurse practitioner in the state. Legally, the supervising M.D. must be within 75 miles at all times. Even when the doctor is on vacation, another physician must document that they are temporarily taking over the supervision responsibilities. Although it may appear to be a restrictive setback, this requirement could also be used to your advantage.
The benefit is that you will always have a mentor close by. Your supervising physician will become an excellent resource to help you learn, grow, and strive to be the best in your field. Take advantage of the opportunity to gain knowledge and insight from the physician that you are working alongside. Your collaborating physician is an excellent source of advice and resources to increase your salary as a nurse practitioner.
Just as your collaborating physician will serve as a mentor, your peers and professional relationships can be equally beneficial. Consider joining state-specific nurse practitioner associations.
The Advanced Practitioner Network of the Ozarks is a professional organization that helps nurse practitioners come together for networking, career advancement, and meeting the needs of the people in Missouri. They hold an annual conference that includes plenty of opportunities to earn CE credits. Some interesting classes they have held in the past include:
Another organization to consider for networking opportunities is the Association of Missouri Nurse Practitioners.
By joining a network of like-minded health professionals, you will learn what other nurse practitioners in your area are doing to increase their salaries. You may stumble upon higher-paying job opportunities from headhunters who attend sponsored events.
If your relationships don’t prove effective as tools to increase your salary, a physical move may improve your pocketbook. Relocation to the neighboring states of Illinois and Oklahoma can add 5-10% to your annual income. If you’re not ready to move out of state, you could consider moving closer to St. Joseph, MO where some of the state’s highest-paid nurse practitioners make 15% more on average per year!
Despite the state’s restrictions, earning a great living as a nurse practitioner in Missouri is possible; it only requires some great networking and collaboration to reach your goals.
